Detroit casinos flourishing in tough times

Detroit has shed jobs, many residents and too much of its car industry. But its casino business is doing very, very well.

The city's unemployment is 29%, but gaming revenue at its three casinos has been off only 2% from a year ago this year. Meantime, Atlantic City's gaming revenue has fallen 14%, and the Las Vegas Strip is down 14%.

Detroit casino operators credit their good fortune to everything from new hotel rooms to the smoking ban in Ontario, just across the river, which has prompted many Canadian gamers to migrate across the Detroit River to gamble.
