A task force to study the feasibility of opening a casino on New York's Long Island is being proposed by local lawmakers.
The Shinnecock Indian Tribe in Southampton has expressed an interest in working with Suffolk officials to open a casino, although the group still needs to receive federal recognition before it can move forward with the proposal. Guesses vary on how long that process might take, but, with the incoming President of the U.S., Barack Obama, favoring reparations for once-oppressed groups, the process may move along quickly, after next Jan. 20.
Legislation is still required to create the task force, but that is in the works. The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, is processing the application from the tribe.
